No way your setup is 100% same and take almost 60 sec difference just because of FS.Ĭompany-mandated McAfee which appears to examine every file opened Are you starting Emacs from a networked drive over VPN? That would explain the difference. I used to do the same and I never experienced such difference. ![]() I load about 150 packages in ~2 seconds in Linux, yet the same config takes 59 seconds in Windows with only 1 GC. I agree, imagine that Microsoft couldn't implement a proper file system after 25 years of development but relay on a cruddy homecook, right? :Dīy the way, I have heard some people who develop Linux drivers claimed NTFS is fastest FS in existence, but those claims were in 2011, and it is not clear from the conext if it was on a rotational disk or SSD. NTFS is still a cruddy FS and cannot properly handle a lot of small files efficiently. BTW, I will always admit I'm biased against Windows. Under exactly the right circumstances, Windows sucks.under the wrong circumstances, it really, really sucks. I've not tried this on Mac in a long, long time, but suspect it would be about the same as Linux. Sure, Emacs without anything ("- Q") opens quickly enough, but who wants to use it that way. And of course with COVID-19, I work from home over VPN and that damned Windows Explorer code has to map or confirm remote mappings even when everything being done is local to laptop. Added into that the company-mandated McAfee which appears to examine every file opened, and you have massive slowdowns. What is a factor (IMO) is that Windows NTFS is still a cruddy FS and cannot properly handle a lot of small files efficiently. I use the same config for both Linux (home) and Windows (work) PCs both have SSD, so drive speed not a factor.
